Thorn & Bred
Identity Design for a Community-Focused Brand
I developed the complete brand identity for Thorn & Bred, a unique coffee shop and plant haven located in the heart of Lockhart, Texas. The client’s mission was to establish a sustainable, quality-driven "third place"—a welcoming space designed to foster creativity and local connection.
Moodboard & Brainstorming
The first critical step in developing the Thorn & Bred identity was the creation of a comprehensive mood board. This visual strategy document was used to define the desired aesthetic, ensuring the final brand identity would align with the client’s vision. The board deliberately pulled together imagery that combined natural textures and organic color palettes with clean, contemporary layouts. This balance of rustic charm and modern sophistication was essential for establishing a visual roadmap that guided the entire design process, guaranteeing that the final brand identity would feel both warm, welcoming, and high-quality.
Phase 1: Concepting
The initial conceptual phase was critical for determining the optimal visual direction for the Thorn & Bred brand. To ensure the final identity accurately represented the client’s unique vision, I developed three distinct low-fidelity logo concepts. Each option was designed to explore a different strategic approach to the brief—testing the balance between sophisticated modernity, organic naturalism, and rustic charm. This deliberate exploration allowed the client to strategically choose the tone that best captured the brand’s commitment to community, quality, and its unique status as both a coffee shop and a plant haven.
Brand Guidelines
The approved logo captures the essence of the brand through its bold yet approachable design. The logomark features a hand-drawn coffee cup stylized with a saguaro cactus, perfectly blending artisanal craftsmanship with the brand’s desert-inspired roots and plant haven aesthetic. This organic feel is strategically balanced by the typography, which uses a soft, rounded sans-serif typeface to convey warmth and approachability while ensuring superior readability. The system is finalized with an earthy, desert-inspired color palette, utilizing warm brown tones for comfort and authenticity, contrasted with soft green to reflect growth and a grounded sensibility. Together, these elements form a unified identity that reflects the brand’s dual commitment to quality and creativity.
Once the visual identity was approved, I developed a comprehensive brand style guide to ensure Thorn & Bred could maintain perfect consistency across every touchpoint and scale its brand with confidence.

I delivered a versatile set of logo lockups and defined strict usage rules to ensure the brand presents clearly whether on a tiny social media icon or large signage. Furthermore, I codified the earthy, desert-inspired color palette with precise codes for guaranteed consistency across both digital and print media, and I established a professional typography system using a sophisticated pairing of typefaces (Slice and Lora) to balance modern elegance with superior readability.

This comprehensive final delivery ensures the brand can scale seamlessly while maintaining its unique, high-quality visual identity and integrity.
